                   SLAP

.

SLAP stands for the Southern Louisiana Anti-crime Patrol.

We are a all volunteer, citizen based group of local, life long residents here in the New Orleans, Louisiana area who were fed up with the failed stationary crime camera's here in our city and the growing and out of control crime rate that the local law enforcement officials can't seem to stop.

We patrol the streets of New Orleans and the surrounding area with video camera's mounted on the dash boards of our own vehicles, looking for street crimes, and report them to the proper authorities. We monitor the situation until the law enforcement officials show up and leave the area looking for crimes elsewhere. We have been doing this since December 6,2008. We have had some success with many incidents reported to the Louisiana State Police, St.Tammany Sheriff's Dept. and the New Orleans Police Dept. We have also turned over video to the proper area law enforcement officials when requested.

Since we started patrols, we have received very little outside funding. We have submitted applications for an appropriations bill from the senate and congress. We applied for a grant from the U.S. Justice Department, and tried to get a closed door meeting with the New Orleans City council to ask for funding. Even though we have received letters of support from Senators Mary Landrieu and David Vitter, and a letter of support from Arnie Fielkow, the former President of the New Orleans City Council, we have been unsuccessful in securing funding for this worth- while effort to curb crime here in the New Orleans area.
